- Nearly 1.2 million of India's 1.5 million schools are government-run, serving up to 140 million children from disadvantaged backgrounds. According to various statistics and studies, while much has been accomplished in terms of enrolment and school accessibility, quality and equality problems remain unresolved, affecting the lives of millions of children who are not privileged.
- Only 25% of students in Grade 5 can perform simple division
- More than one-fourth of children enrolled in Class 8 can’t read at a Class 2 level
- Over 60% of dropouts, discontinue education due to students’ lack of interest, owing to deficiencies in curriculum and teaching infrastructure
There has been reasonable focus on education by the government over the last decade, through various initiatives and allocation of funds, to ensure children have access to education. With the implementation of the RTE Act, there was an upsurge in school enrolments. However, the dropout rate at the higher primary level did not decline and students still grapple with low-quality education, leading to low learning levels and self-esteem which neither prepares them for a vocation nor for college education.
School Transformation Engagement Programme
Our School Transformation Engagement Programme (STEP) seeks to resolve problems of education and equality in government schools, resulting in more conducive learning conditions and better student learning outcomes. The key goal of our initiative is to improve learning levels in schools.
We focus on improving school management processes and systems, as well as developing a supportive learning atmosphere, teacher capacity building, and direct learning level activities in classrooms. Our programmes not only work with teachers in the classroom, but also with parents, communities, volunteers, and children to address issues of school quality and equity.
