Chess as a Blueprint for Critical Thinking
When 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest Indian to ever defeat the current world champion Magnus Carlsen, the chess world was enthralled. Gukesh made all the right moves with composure and laser-like focus, not only on the board but also in demonstrating to the world what patience, strategy, and vision can accomplish. His victory was more than just a sporting achievement; it served as a reminder that life can be changed by making the right choices at the right moment. And fittingly well, he accomplished this feat in chess, a game born in India—our very own intellectual heritage to the world.
As the world of chess rejoiced over Gukesh’s incredible achievement, we at Dream School Foundation saw in it a spark—a flash of inspiration that resonated profoundly with our mission. His journey reminded us why we do what we do: nurture young minds to think critically, act wisely, and pursue their dreams with clarity and courage. Inspired by this impactful moment, DSF’s Transformational Youth Development Programme arranged a Chess Workshop for our PUC (Pre-University college) students. Our goal was not just to introduce them to the game, but to cultivate the skills it represents-critical thinking, cognitive growth, decision-making, and strategic planning.
Throughout the workshop, students interacted with chess basics, studied tactical themes, and delved into how each action on the board mirrors decisions in real life. They learned firsthand how each choice has an impact, and how the greatest players—such as Gukesh—are those who strategize a few moves in advance. Most encouraging to see was the shift in the mindset of the students. Chess became more than a game—it became a language of possibility. Initially hesitant students soon found themselves looking forward to moves, thinking ahead, and trusting their choices. The workshop fostered focus and self-discipline—two attributes needed not just for chess, but for college, professional life, and life in general.
Gukesh’s background was presented at the workshop’s start—not as a success story, but as a reminder that brilliance can be born of modesty, with proper guidance and unwavering tenacity. His transformation from a young student to a world champion made our students believe in themselves.
It is this belief that drives us at DSF. Whether it’s through sports, workshops, or mentoring, we continuously strive to equip our youth with the tools they need to succeed—not just in exams, but in life. We recognize that education encompasses more than classroom learning. It’s about growing thinkers, leaders, and responsible citizens who will be equipped to handle the challenges of tomorrow.
As we move ahead, we are still determined to create a world where every child, irrespective of background, can play their own winning game—like Gukesh.
